Here's a small bowl I made from interlocking layers of birch plywood. I designed it using Poser, Blender and Autodesk 123D Make, then used a laser cutter to precisely cut all 40 of the pieces. The bowl stands at about a foot in height and, despite being very light, is sturdy and extremely well balanced so it won't topple over when filled.

NASA: Fotos vom Mars direkt aufs Smartphone und Tablet

 
Ich habe mir eben ein Stück gefühlte Science Fiction auf meinen Androiden installiert: Die NASA hat eine kostenlose App rausgebracht, die Mars-Fotos vom Opportunity Rover aufs Smartphone bzw. Tablet schickt. Wer eine Rot-Grün-Brille rumliegen hat, kann sich die 3D-Variante anschauen, ältere Archiv-Aufnahmen sind auch verfügbar. Die App gibts für Android und iPhone/iPad, eine fürs Mars Science Laboratory soll ebenfalls rauskommen – wenn das Teil in einem Stück auf dem Roten Planeten im August landet. Wie dem auch sei: Wenn ich irgendwo grüne Männchen oder Weibchen entdecke, sage ich Bescheid ...

Der zertifizierte Lego-Bauer Ryan McNaught alias The BrickMan hat in 250 Arbeitsstunden aus aberwitzigen 120.000 Steinen eine Apollo 11 Saturn V Rakete mit allem Pipapo gebaut. Das Teil ist 19 Fuß hoch, also um die 5.7 Meter. Eine Bildergalerie gibts bei Flickr, wer genau hinschaut entdeckt auf einem Foto zwei alte Bekannte aus Star Wars.

D.I.Y Beton-Schalstein-Toaster

Adi Zaffran hat aus einem Beton-Schalstein einen Pita Toaster gebaut. Clevere Idee. Allerdings bin ich mir nicht ganz sicher, ob man die Eisenstangen ohne Starkstrom überhaupt zum Glühen ... aber vielleicht gehts darum auch gar nicht.

The pita bread as a staple food led me to the use of simple and basic building materials. Here is a brick oven which is elementary while taking advantage of the cement block's morphology.

Interessanter Ansatz, ein einfaches Gericht zu verkomplizieren: Die New York Times zeigt ein bischen Nudelgeometrie aus dem Buch Pasta by Design von George L. Legrande. Wer die Gleichungen innerhalb der Kochzeit auflöst, darf sich Chefkoch nennen.

Architect George L. Legrande has compiled and profiled 92 different kinds of pasta, classifying them into types using the science of phylogeny (the study of relatedness among natural forms). Opening the book is a pasta family tree, revealing unexpected relationships between pasta shapes, their usage and common DNA. Each subsequent spread is devoted to a single pasta, and features a short text that explains the foods geographical origin, its process of manufacture as well as its etymology alongside suggestions for minute-perfect preparation. Next the pasta shape is rendered as both a mathematical equation and a line diagram that displays every distinctive scrunch, ridge and crimp with loving precision.
