The 2.4Ghz project uses a wireless video receiver to hack into wireless surveillance cameras. This device (which is now part of consumers popular products), can be used for wireless surveillance cameras, but it can also be used for parents to monitor their children. Such systems are becoming more popular as they get cheaper. But what most users of those devices don't realise is that they are broadcasting the signal. This project (on-going) has several layers. Initially, I have been walking around different towns in Europe to collect and record footage received with the device ... The second part of the project ... consists of placing the device in the street to reveal the presence of the cameras and to make obvious the fact that anyone can receive those signals. The third stage of the project consists of a series of workshops: 2.4GHz Workshop, where participants are invited to explore the CCTV wireless networks of their city by searching and recording 2.4GHz surveillance video signals. The recorded material is then compiled into a movie of the event.

Spiegelkreaturen per Face Tracking von Karolina Sobeck

Vimeo: All the Universe is Full of the Lives of Perfect Creatures (via Super Punch)

"All the Universe is Full of the Lives of Perfect Creatures" ist ein Projekt von Karolina Sobeck: Kopfbewegungen und Mimik werden per Face Tracking erfasst und von einem Tierkopf imitiert, der aus Betrachter-Perspektive über das eigene Spiegelbild gelegt wird. Mehr auf ihrer Webseite:
Viewer’s movement and expressions are mimicked by an animal’s head which is overlaid on the viewer’s reflection. The resulting effect invites inquiry into issues of self-awareness, empathy and non-verbal communication. A different animal appears every time a person walks in front of the mirror. The animals represent species from across the spectrum of domestication, from wild predators to domesticated species to animals who have evolved to coexist with human settlements, while remaining ‘wild’. The animal mimics the viewer’s facial expressions, interspersing them with its own independent ones. One feels compelled to in turn enact those animal expressions, lip licking and snarling, fully inhabiting the role, following while being followed ...

Years: Holzscheiben als Schallplatten

Enter the Matrix: Anton Steenbock in Rio

Hipster-Fallen

Jeff Greenspan und Hunter Fine stellen Hipster-Fallen in New York auf:
"Urban Traps is a project where we lay traps for certain subcultures in hopes of protecting neighborhoods from infestation and to collect different species for further study ..."

YouTubeDirektPrivacy (via Make)

"The curtain is smaller than the window, but an additional surveillance camera and an old laptop provide it with intelligence: The computer sees the pedestrians and locates them. With a motor attached, it positions the curtain exactly where the pedestrians are ... But in the end, it doesn’t protect my privacy at all. It seems that the existence of my little curtain is leading itself ad absurdum, simply by doing its job very well. My moving curtain attracts the looks of people which usually would never care about my window. It is even the star of the street, now! ... And because of that, it fails." My little piece of Privacy

Rube-Goldberg-Maschinenraum

YouTubeDirektRubeGoldbergMaschinenraum (via Make)

Heiliger Strohsack!
This room was constructed with the humor of Rube Goldberg cartoons in mind at the St. Louis City Museum. Developed organically, the room started with one exercycle on the bench and the thought, "What can this become?" From there, visual and comedic mechanics were added day by day to create a space that with the push of a button, the room would erupt with motion and activity. A line shaft and belt system from the Industrial Revolution was used to transmit power and action over the viewers head, encompassing them with movement and the challenge of deciphering what powers what. An umbrella opens and closes with the aid of cables and manikin hands, a cup floats and falls with the power of pneumatic pistons, a 3ft. wheel of feet kicks up opposing balancing beams, a leg and foot continue to 'kick the bucket' and a fireplace bellows that spins the pinwheel. The line shaft continues on the opposing side to spin a turn of the century shoe polisher and a wall of interconnected bicycle wheels. Shovels hang from the ceiling while being punched by boxing gloves and old dry cleaner racks play the xylophones. In an age of digital automation this purely mechanical machine was created by trial and error, with the driving thought "Maybe this will work."

Urban Speaker

"This portable urban furniture allows people to broadcast their voice in public by calling a telephone number from their mobile phones. The Urban Speaker resembles construction signage and blends in with its urban surroundings ... Users who place the call get an automatic answer and can speak their mind for sixty seconds after which the call is terminated. A QR (Quick Response) barcode on the sign allows some mobile phones to instantly access the urbanspeaker.mobi website for location, event and other details as well as quick dialing of the installation's phone ..."

"The $37,000 piece was built with funds from Nissan, which is building a $3.7 million dealership in the city. Santa Rosa’s “1% for art” law dictates that 1% of major construction projects be devoted to public art ... Grieve and Spector collected the hundreds of bicycles they needed for the project from community donations ..." California Artists Build Obelisk Out of Bicycles

panoptICONS – Vögel mit Überwachungskamera

Vimeo: panoptICONS Utrecht 2010  (via Wooster Collective)

‘panoptICONS’ addresses the fact that you are constantly being watched by surveillance cameras in city centres. The surveillance camera seems to have become a real pest that feeds on our privacy. To represent this, camera birds - city birds with cameras instead of heads - were placed throughout the city centre of Utrecht where they feed on our presence. In addition, a camera bird in captivity was displayed to show the feeding process and to make the everyday breach of our privacy more personal and tangible.
