Astrofotografie: The Darkest Possible Sky

Astrofotograf Stéphane Guisard hat nach dem Platz auf der Erde gesucht, an dem es nachts am wenigsten Lichtverschmutzung gibt, um den "darkest possible sky" zu fotografieren. Gefunden hat er ihn in der Atacamawüste in Chile. Bei Astrosurf kann man in das Foto reinzoomen, außerdem gibts eine 360° und Panorama-Ansicht. Atemberaubend ...

I was wondering what conditions should be met to have the "darkest" sky ... Well, obviously there should be no Moon light. The Milky Way and zodiacal light should not be visible neither, and the image should be taken at a place with no light pollution. If these are correct criteriae, the following picture must be very close to what the "darkest" sky could be. The following image was taken at new Moon (No Moon light), middle of the night (minimum zodiacal light effect), in the Atacama desert close to Paranal observatory (no light pollution). The chosen place for this picture has the particularity to be located at a latitude which value is close to the declination of the galactic southern pole. The picture was therefore also taken when the galactic pole passes at zenith, ensuring that there is no Milky Way up in the sky. When all these conditions are met, the very faint Gegenschein becomes visible. Like the zodiacal light, the gegenschein is sunlight reflected by interplanetary dust. Most of this dust is orbiting the sun in about the ecliptic plane. The first image of this kind ever taken was made a few years ago here.. The "by product" of this image is that the Milky Way plane lies all around the horizon as visible in this 360 degrees panoramic view ..." The darkest sky? Milky Way all around the horizon line and Gegenschein.

Alle 13.000 Satelliten die um die Erde fliegen in Google Earth

Im Google Earth Blog kann man sich in Echtzeit anschauen, wo sich gerade die 13.000 (!) Satelliten befinden, die um die Erde schwirren. Ganz so eng wirds da oben wohl nicht zugehen, die Umlaufbahnen scheinen nicht ganz maßstabsgetreu zu sein. Trotzdem würde ich Aliens vor einem Erdurlaub zur Vollkaskoversicherung fürs Raumschiff raten, außer den Satelliten kreist da oben noch eine ziemliche Menge Weltraumschrot.

Memo von JFK zum Wettlauf ins All

Kurz nachdem ein gewisser Juri Alexejewitsch Gagarin als erster Mensch im Weltraum war, schrieb im April 1961 ein mit der Gesamtsituation im Outer Space völlig unzufriedener John F. Kennedy ein Memo an seinen Vize Lyndon B. Johnson. 

1. Do we have a chance of beating the Soviets by putting a laboratory in space, or by a trip around the moon, or by a rocket to go to the moon and back with a man. Is there any other space program which promises dramatic results in which we could win?

4. In building large boosters should we put out emphasis on nuclear, chemical or liquid fuel, or a combination of these three?

Dänische Amateure bauen bemannte Open Source Rakete

Richard Branson behauptet zwar, dass sein SpaceShipTwo das sexyste Raumschiff aller Zeiten sei, ich persönlich finde folgendes Projekt aber tausendmal interessanter: Von einer Startrampe in der Ostsee wollen dänische Hobbyraketenbauer am 31. August eine selbstkonstruierte, bemannte Rakete mit einem Crashtest-Dummy an Bord ins All schießen:

"A team of Danish volunteers has built a rocket capable of carrying a human into space, and will be launching it in a week’s time. The project ... has been funded entirely by donations and sponsorship ... The rocket is named HEAT1X-TYCHO BRAHE, and its first test flight will carry a crash-test dummy, rather than a human, so that the safety aspects of the design can be analyzed. It’ll launch from a floating platform that the team has also built, which will be towed into the middle of the Baltic Sea by a submarine called Nautilus that the pair built as their last project ... The creators are members of the SomethingAwful web community, and have been posting pictures and answering questions there. Die beiden Videos sind Vlogs von Bord der Mars-500-Mission – einem Experiment der russischen Weltraumagentur Roskosmos und der europäischen ESA, bei dem sich sechs Freiwillige für 520 Tage gemeinsam wegschließen lassen, um einen Hin- und Rückflug zum Mars zu simulieren.

Wenn  ich mir die beiden Teile (speziell den ersten) hinsichtlich Ausstattung der Module so ansehe, könnten sie das Experiment im Prinzip auch gleich abbrechen, statt Astronauten ein paar (Videospiel)-Nerds in eine Rakete stecken und ...

Die Überschrift ist nicht ganz exakt, mir ist aber gerade nichts besseres eingefallen: Was sich da im Video ein bisschen anhört, wie ein THX-Demo im Kino, das über kaputte Boxen läuft, sind die Schwingungen des Magnetfelds der Sonne, das Astronomen der Uni Sheffield in Töne übersetzt haben:

"Astronomers at the University of Sheffield have managed to record for the first time the eerie musical harmonies produced by the magnetic field in the outer atmosphere of the sun. They found that huge magnetic loops that have been observed coiling away from the outer layer of the sun's atmosphere, known as coronal loops, vibrate like strings on a musical instrument. In other cases they behave more like soundwaves as they travel through a wind instrument. Using satellite images of these loops, which can be over 60,000 miles long, the scientists were able to recreate the sound by turning the visible vibrations into noises and speeding up the frequency so it is audible to the human ear ..." Video vom Innenleben des Raygun Gothic Rocketships

Das Raygun Gothic Rocketship ist eine ca. 12 Meter hohe Rakete aus Metall, im retrofuturistischen SF-Pulp-Stil der 30er und 40er Jahre gehalten. Mich persönlich erinnert das Ding an Flash Gordons Raumschiff aus der alten SW-Fernsehserie, die ich als Kind im Fernsehen gesehen und geliebt habe. Obwohl das Raygun Gothic Rocketship einigermaßen populär ist, habe ich bislang neben jeder Menge Fotos zwar einige Making of-Videos gesehen, aber noch kein gescheites vom Innenleben. Private Raumfahrt: Aufblasbare Raumstation

Vor ein paar Jahren hat ein Unternehmen der NASA ein paar Patente abgekauft und auf deren Basis eine aufblasbare Raumstation entwickelt. In vier Jahren sollen Module ins All geschossen und dort zur ersten privaten Raumstation zusammengebaut werden. Vermietet werden soll das Dings zunächst an Länder, die sich ein eigenes Weltraumprogramm nicht leisten können/wollen, längerfristig ist aber auch Weltraumtourismus geplant. Zwei Test-Module befinden sich seit 2007 im Orbit und funktionieren angeblich einwandfrei. Die New York Times hat dazu einen sehr ausführlichen Artikel. Alternativ gibts eine Slideshow mit den wichtigsten Infos:
