Fotos von Clubs am Morgen danach

Prima Idee und tolle Fotos: André Giesemann und Daniel Schulz haben für ihre Serie "Vom Bleiben" Clubs am Morgen nach der Party fotografiert. Ein Kurz-Interview mit den beiden gibts bei Zeit Campus. Das da oben ist der Goldene Pudel, in dem ich mir selbst schon die eine oder andere Nacht um die Ohren geschlagen habe.

“Vom Bleiben“ in collaboration with Daniel Schulz, documents the moment in which the night at the techno club is over and the visitors have left the location. It is the moment in which the traces of the event become visible. The cleaning-lights illuminating the room evoke a sense of awakening in the visitors. When the clubs close at daytime, we enter their rooms and the battlefield that has been left behind. As soon as the last visitors have left and the cleaning-light has been turned on, we start to photographically record the present scene and atmosphere. The moment before everything is put back in order exists only for a short time. Due to the long exposure time technically required, we artificially extend this moment, the time of exposure matching real time. We have set ourselves the task to document the often only temporary existence of techno clubs over a longer period of time.

Die 1-Bit Camera (iOS App)

Das Selbstporträt da oben habe ich mit der 1-Bit Camera geschossen, eine retro Foto-App für iOS und mein neues Hobby für die nachsten fünf Minuten. Wenn mir das Ding übermorgen noch Spaß macht, starte ich vielleicht ein Tumblr: Die Welt von heute durch die Augen eines Cyborgs aus den 1980ern. 

Larry Towell: Faces of the Taliban

Larry Towell hat Taliban in Afghanistan porträtiert und was die Fotos von anderen unterscheidet ist, dass sich die Fundis unvermummt vor seine Kamera gestellt haben.  

Magnum photographer Larry Towell planned to embed with the Taliban last year when the Afghan contact he was using was forced to flee the country ... While Towell still wanted to embed, it was too dangerous for several reasons. First, Western journalists are often seen as propagandists for the U.S. military. Also, the Taliban self-funds their war, and kidnapping for ransom has become more common, he said. Many of Towell’s friends and colleagues, along with local journalists, encouraged him to find a well-tied local to take his place. The journalist he used “talks to both sides,” providing rapport with the insurgents ... The images are “just portraits of insurgents, just to give a glimpse of the other side,” he said ... The images give the rebels a “voice and a place.” Taliban members usually have covered faces. This set of photos is unique because of the confidence shown by these men, Towell said. “They’re not ominous; they’re not all wrapped up looking sinister,” he said. “(Some) just look like kids.” This glimpse into their camp humanizes the insurgents when the “media dehumanizes (the) enemy during war.” As Towell spent time “driving through history” on his visits to Afghanistan, he wished for a glimpse into the past when locals might easily welcome him into their homes. “I wish I knew Afghanistan before the wars,” he said, “when you could go anywhere. … There was a time. I wish I was there.”

Sun City von Peter Granser – Fotos einer Seniorensiedlung

Peter Granser hat für seine mit dem World Press Award 2002 ausgezeichnete Fotoserie "Sun City" die größte Senioren-Siedlung der USA besucht, deren vermögende Einwohner mindestens 55 Jahre oder älter sind. Prima Fotoserie, irgendwo zwischen Doku und Surrealismus – auch wenn mich noch Infrastruktur und Hilfe im Alltag für diejenigen interessiert hätte, die solche benötigen.

Peter Granser´s project “Sun City” is a series about a retirement colony in the American southwest, where you are only allowed to live, if you are over 55 years of age. In this strange city of spunky senior citizens, he encountered countless whimsical details. He took wrinkles, cacti, hair dryer hoods and plastic flamingos and compiled them into a basically true and only slightly exaggerated story about the future of aging. In “Sun City” being a senior doesn’t mean sitting in a rocking chair on the porch, looking back at the past, gradually taking one’s leave of life. Quite the opposite: Granser’s picture story is peopled by men and women who without any compromises or sentimentality have radically reinvented themselves in their latter years ...

Fotos von Mädchzimmer: A Girl and her Room von Rania Matar

Rania Matar hat in ihrer Fotoserie "A Girl and her Room" im Mittleren Osten und den USA Teenager-Mädchen und ihre Zimmer porträtiert. 

This project is about teenage girls and young women at a transitional time of their lives, alone in the privacy of their own personal space and surroundings: their bedroom, a womb within the outside world ... I initially started this work focusing on teenage girls in the United States and eventually expanded the project to include girls from the two worlds I am most familiar with, the two worlds I experienced myself as a teen and a young twenty year old: the United States and the Middle East. This is how this project became very personal to me. I became fascinated with the similar issues girls at that age face, regardless of culture, religion and background, as they learn to deal with all the pressures that arise as they become consciously aware of the surrounding world wherever this may be.

Metalheads von Jörg Brüggemann

Musikalisch bin ich mit Heavy Metal nie richtig warm geworden. Was ich mittlerweile aber recht gerne mag, ist der dokumentarische Blick auf das Kulturphänomen. Einen solchen wirft der Fotograf  Jörg Brüggemann auf die Szene, der für sein Buch "Metalheads" rund um die Welt gereist ist und die Globalisierung der Metal Kultur festgehalten hat. Auf seiner Webseite gibts 24 Fotos zum Reinschnuppern, den obligatorischen Buch-Trailer habe ich unten eingebunden.

Heavy metal is a phenomenon. Although this musical genre is still ridiculed by many, it is currently more popular and successful around the world than at its supposed peak in the 1980s. Today, so-called metalheads can be found worldwide. No matter who they are or where they come from, they are united by heavy metal across borders, generations, genders, religions, and social classes. The photographes have been taken in Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Egypt, Germany, Indonesia, Malaysia, Switzerland and the USA.

Machine Pareidolia

Vor ein paar Wochen hatte ich hier einen Zusammenschnitt aus Tracking-Videos, der die Welt aus Robotersicht zeigen sollte. Einen ähnlichen Ansatz verfolgt Greg Borenstein, der ein Facetracking-Programm über die Fotos einer Pareidolia-Gruppe bei Flickr ala Faces in Places laufen lassen hat. Um zu untersuchen, ob die Software – wie wir – in den Gegenständen Gesichter erkennt. Das Ergebnis kann man sich ebenfalls bei Flickr im Album Machine Pareidolia ansehen und in seinem Blog ein paar interessante Gedanken dazu lesen.

I ran 681 photos from the Hello Little Fella Flickr group through Jason Saradigh's FaceTracker (with the help of Kyle McDonald's ofxFaceTracker). FaceTracker detected faces in about 8% of the photos. Sometimes the faces it detected are the same a person would see, sometimes they differ.

Porno Stores am Times Square in den 80ern

Beim Rumstöbern im Life Archiv bin ich auf eine kleine Fotoserie von Ted Thai mit Porno-Läden am Times Square aus dem Jahr 1986 gestoßen. Eine Übergangszeit, als der Times Square nicht mehr ganz das gefährliche Pflaster der späten 70er, aber noch ein paar Jahre von der Disneyfizierung unter Rudolph Giuliani in den 90ern entfernt war. Eine ähnliche Entwicklung, wie man seit einigen Jahren in Hamburg rund um die Reeperbahn beobachten kann. Die übrigen Fotos nach dem Klick ...

Ostküste bei Nacht mit und aus der ISS

Fotos aus dem All von der Erde bei Nacht gibts wie Sand am Meer bzw. Sterne am Himmel. Beim aus der Image of the Day Galerie der NASA ist noch ein bisschen Raumstation mit dabei, was es für mich besonders macht. Sieht in groß noch besser aus. 

An Expedition 30 crew member aboard the International Space Station took this nighttime photograph of much of the Atlantic coast of the United States. Large metropolitan areas and other easily recognizable sites from the Virginia/Maryland/Washington, D.C. area are visible in the image that spans almost to Rhode Island. Boston is just out of frame at right. Long Island and the New York City area are visible in the lower right quadrant. Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are near the center. Parts of two Russian vehicles parked at the orbital outpost are seen in left foreground.

The Lively Morgue: Fotoarchiv der New York Times bei Tumblr

Die New York Times, deren Archiv den doppeldeutigen Spitznamen "The Morgue" (= Archiv oder Leichenhalle) trägt, bringt Leben in selbiges und hat mit "The Lively Morgue" ein Tumblr-Blog gestartet, auf dem regelmäßig ausgewählte Fotos aus dem riesigen Fundus gepostet werden:

How many? We don’t know. Our best guess is five million to six million prints and contact sheets (each sheet, of course, representing many discrete images) and 300,000 sacks of negatives, ranging in format size from 35 millimeter to 5 by 7 inches — at least 10 million frames in all. The picture archive also includes 13,500 DVDs, each storing about 4.7 gigabytes worth of imagery. When the Museum of Modern Art set out to exhibit the highlights of the Times archive in 1996, it dispatched four curators. They spent nine months poring over 3,000 subjects, working with two Times editors, one of whom spent a year on the project. In the end, they estimated that they’d seen only one-quarter of the total. If we posted 10 new archival pictures every weekday on Tumblr, just from our print collection, we wouldn’t have the whole thing online until the year 3935. That’s a bit too ambitious. Instead, we’ll be dipping in and publishing several photographs each week, some of which will be available for purchase and some of which will be accompanied by a more extensive back story posted on the Lens blog. As we do so, we’ll gradually digitize at least the tip of the iceberg of this enormous trove, guaranteeing its continued utility and accessibility in the future ...

Toll auch, dass man per Klick auf die Fotos deren Rückseite einblenden kann, die mit Anmerkungen, Notizen und Datum versehen sind. Alles in allem ein prima Projekt – auch wenn ich eine Lösung wie das Google gehostete LIFE Foto-Archiv besser gefunden hätte.

Portraits kongolesischer Wrestler von Colin Delfosse

Colin Delfosse hat kongolesische Wrestler portraitiert und damit den "PDN photo annual award" letztes Jahr gewonnen. Auch wenn man Wrestling wenig bis nichts abgewinnen kann, die Fotos sind absolut sehenswert. (via Blogbuzzter)

Kinshasa, 2010. Eight million inhabitants, thousands of shegués (street children), hundreds of wrestlers and their brass bands. Edingwe, Dragon, City Train, Mbokotomo : the “legends” of Congolese wrestling invent themselves on a daily basis in the outskirts of Kinshasa. 
 

Body-building, and even black magic enthusiasts fight for glory in makeshift rings. They come from the streets and their charisma commands respect and admiration. But the heros of the ring are modest in victory : « Kobeta libanga papa mundele » [we manage, white man]. In the last hours of the day, when they have hung up their everyday “occupations”, they put on masks and wrestling kit ready to fight. 

 

The motorised parade of wrestlers attracts crowds from the dusty streets of Massina, Ngili and Matete, towns round the Congolese capital. In back yards, on the tables of the street cafés, or even in the street, the spell casters warm up over primus stoves and cannabis. The ring is hastily set up, the judge climbs onto the ropes. “Let the match begin!” The fight starts and is usually more or less fixed. Rounds follow one another until the final spell is cast, until the adversary is floored, until the next fight.

Fotojournalist Jason Lee hat eine Sexpuppenfabrik in China besucht und ein paar Impressionen vom Herstellungsprozess festgehalten. Fotos mit Beschreibung bei Reuters, ohne Begleittext dafür aber ein paar mehr bei Buzzfeed.

Fotoserie über nigerianische Prostituierte in Italien

Migration von Paolo Patrizi ist eine bedrückende Serie über illegale Migrantinnen aus Nigeria, die in Italien auf dem Staßen- bzw. Wald- und Wiesenstrich anschaffen.

"The phenomenon of foreign women, who line the roadsides of Italy, has become a notorious fact of Italian life. These women work in sub-human conditions; they are sent out without any hope of regularizing their legal status and can be easily transferred into criminal networks. Many are Africans working as prostitutes to send money home to their families. For nearly twenty years the women of Benin City, a town in the state of Edo in the south-central part of Nigeria, have been going to Italy to work in the sex trade and every year successful ones have been recruiting younger girls to follow them. The Nigerian trafficking industry is fueled by the combination of widespread emigration aspirations and severely limited possibilities for migrating to Europe. The term Trafficking of persons is restricted to instances where people are deceived, threatened, or coerced into situations of exploitation, including prostitution ... For many girls prostitution in Italy has become an entirely acceptable trade and the legend of their success makes the fight against sex traffickers all the more difficult ..."

Am Samstag von Jens Scholz auf der ACTA-Demo in Köln fotografiert, begegnet mir das Foto nicht mal 24 Stunden später in den ersten US-Blogs oder um es mit Gandalf zu sagen: "Ein Zauberer kommt nie zu spät. Ebensowenig zu früh. Er trifft genau dann ein, wenn er es für richtig hält."

Vintage Monowheel

Monowheels hatten ihre Momente in der Science Fiction, haben sich im Alltag aber nie durchgesetzt. Im Life-Archiv bin ich auf kleine Foto-Serie von Loomis Dean gestoßen, entstanden auf einer Motorshow im Jahr 1952 – als Monowheels noch eine Zukunft hatten, Ingenieure weiße Kittel trugen und an Tankstellen geraucht wurde. Bunte DDR von Harald Hauswald

Bunte DDR von Harald Hauswald ist eine wunderbar beobachte und fotografierte Zeitkapsel mit 25 Alltagsszenen aus der DDR. Funktioniert unabhängig davon, auf welcher Seite der Mauer bzw. Grenze man aufgewachsen ist.

"Ob Familien auf Festen, Ehepaare in ihren Gartenlauben oder Kinder beim Spielen auf der Straße - immer ist er ganz nah dabei." 

Anschließend ruhig einen Blick ins Archiv von Ostkreuz werfen, es lohnt sich. Danke an dieser Stelle für die schnelle und unkomplizierte Erlaubnis, das Foto zu bloggen – erlebt man so von einer Foto-Agentur auch nicht alle Tage.
