Selbstporträt vom Mars-Rover Curiosity

Die NASA hat ein Selbstporträt von ihrem Mars-Rover Curiosity veröffentlicht. Zwar sind auf dem aus 55 Thumbnails zusammengesetzten Foto mal wieder keine Marsbewohner mit drauf, trotzdem finde ich Roboter-Fotos vom Mars jedes Mal wieder total faszinierend:

This self-portrait documents the state of the rover and allows mission engineers to track changes over time, such as dust accumulation and wheel wear ... The mosaic shows the rover at "Rocknest," the spot in Gale Crater where the mission's first scoop sampling took place. Scoop scars can be seen in the regolith in front of the rover. A portion of Mount Sharp appears on the right side. Mountains in the background to the left are the northern wall of Gale Crater. When the rover returns the full-resolution MAHLI frames of the scene, the team plans to generate a more detailed portrait of Curiosity in its Martian neighborhood.

Nicht zynisch gemeint, auch wenn die Fotos erstmal etwas seltsam auf mich gewirkt haben. Bei "Krisengebiet" habe ich halt bisher nicht unbedingt ans Aufladen von Smartphones gedacht. Aber klar, moderne Zeiten und in einer solchen Ausnahmesituation möchte man, wenn möglich, nicht von der Kommunikation abgeschnitten sein.

Im Sog von Sandy werden derzeit die sozialen Netzwerken mit Impressionen vom Frankenstorm (in New York) geflutet. Alexis C. Madrigal sammelt beim Atlantic populäre Fotos und sortiert in Fake und Real. Nicht immer so einfach, wie auf dem Foto oben.

With Hurricane Sandy approaching the New York metro area, the nation's eyes are turning to its largest city. Photos of storms and flooding are popping up all over Twitter, and while many are real, some of them -- especially the really eye-popping ones -- are fake. This post, which will be updated over the next couple of days, is an effort to sort the real from the unreal. Klitzekleiner Verbesserungs-Tipp: Statt Fluxkompensator einen Mr. Fusion Home Energy Reactor zum Recyceln von Windeln einbauen. 

I’ve always loved Back to the Future, and love cars since I was little and grew up going to car shows with my Dad; what better way to tote my 1yr old son around on Halloween than in a transformed $25 Step2 push car I bought off of the kidsale alias at work? So, I spent a few weekends and nights in October recreating the iconic DeLorean with cardboard, tape, paint, and a little help with some EL lighting from my husband, Jeremy. The perfect costume for Cooper’s first Halloween!
