Unterirdisches Kankenhaus in einer Salzmine

Asthmatikern und vielen Allergikern hilft salzige Seeluft. Wie ich gerade gelernt habe, kann man sich aber auch in eine Salzmine legen, was sich dann Speläotherapie nennt. Keine Ahnung ob die was taugt, aber bei Wired gibts einen interessanten Artikel über ein unterirdisches Krankenhaus in der Ukraine mit Fotos von Kirill Kuletski.

"It might be one of the most unconventional hospital wards on Earth, except that technically it’s not on Earth: It’s hundreds of meters below the surface. For decades, the tunnels of the Solotvyno Salt Mine in Ukraine have hosted subterranean convalescents. Patients with various bronchial blockages, asthma and breathing problems are sent to the mines by the Solotvyno’s allergological hospital to suck up the curative air. Kirill Kuletski’s photographs of these mines depict a cool underground outpost whose inhabitants appear to lie in eerie stasis. Kurz nachdem ein gewisser Juri Alexejewitsch Gagarin als erster Mensch im Weltraum war, schrieb im April 1961 ein mit der Gesamtsituation im Outer Space völlig unzufriedener John F. Kennedy ein Memo an seinen Vize Lyndon B. Johnson. 

1. Do we have a chance of beating the Soviets by putting a laboratory in space, or by a trip around the moon, or by a rocket to go to the moon and back with a man. Is there any other space program which promises dramatic results in which we could win?

4. In building large boosters should we put out emphasis on nuclear, chemical or liquid fuel, or a combination of these three?

Vielleicht habe ich früher zu oft Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi und Naqoyqatsi gesehen, dass eine gewisse Zeitraffer-Sättigung bei mir bis heute anhält. Inter // States hat mir aber trotzdem ganz gut gefallen, weil ich Tokio schon immer faszinierend fand, erst recht bei Nacht und außerdem die Musik hervorragend passt.

Joe McMichael, Student am MIT, hat einen Teleporter programmiert, mit dem man sich im Street View-Modus von Google Maps per Zufallsprinzip an irgendeinen Ort auf der Erde beamen lassen kann.

Vor einiger Zeit hatte ich hier von Back to the Future 2 inspirierte Power Laces. Inzwischen hat Blake Bevin ein Update entworfen, das in Massenproduktion gehen könnte – vorausgesetzt es kommt über Kickstarter, wo sie ihr Projekt gepostet hat, bis zum 11. Oktober 2010 genug Geld zusammen:

"Every fan of Back to the Future remembers the shoes that Marty Mcfly donned in 2015 that autolaced on to his foot and his exclaimation: "Power Laces- alright!" ... I will develop and finalize a marketable version and mass produce it. The next version will operate under a different, more efficient mechanism, and will be more suitable for everyday use. panoptICONS – Vögel mit Überwachungskamera

In vielen Städten gibt es mittlerweile (gefühltermaßen) so viele Überwachungskameras wie Tauben. Insofern passt es ganz gut, dass Thomas voor 't Hekke und Bas van Oerle für ihr Projekt panoptICONS in Utrecht Vögel mit Kameras statt Köpfen aufgestellt haben. Aus der Videobeschreibung:

‘panoptICONS’ addresses the fact that you are constantly being watched by surveillance cameras in city centres. The surveillance camera seems to have become a real pest that feeds on our privacy. To represent this, camera birds - city birds with cameras instead of heads - were placed throughout the city centre of Utrecht where they feed on our presence. In addition, a camera bird in captivity was displayed to show the feeding process and to make the everyday breach of our privacy more personal and tangible.

Der Australier Peter Terren hat in seinem Garten einen Tesla-Transformator stehen und jede Menge Spaß damit. Das Videomaterial da oben hat Don Pettit an Bord der ISS aufgenommen, während er in 350 km Höhe mit ca. 28.000 Km/h die Erde umkreist hat. Könnte ich mir stundenlang anschauen, leider dauert das Video nicht mal 40 Sekunden. Glücklicherweise gibts noch mehr fantastische Timelapse from Outer Space im YouTube-Channel der Oregon State University.
