Let's slingshot around the sun and travel back to the 60s for a day of shopping with Leonard Nimoy and family. I discovered this photo spread in the June 1968 issue of TV Star Parade and it's a real treat to see. It's especially fun for all of us Trek fans that missed out on the first and original Trek craze. (I became a fan during the rerun days of the 70s!) Articles like this one gives us a glimpse of a time when Star Trek was new and people were wanting to learn anything and everything about the show. Tons of TV and gossip mags featured as much info on the actors as possible. I like that the photos from this article make it look like Leonard just walked off the Star Trek set to go shopping with his family. Leonard is still sporting his Spock hairdo and is even wearing a similar shirt like his alter ego. It's not every day that a space shuttle lands at LAX. Although this was a first for the major Los Angeles airport hub, it was a last for the space shuttle Endeavour, as it completed its tour of California skies and landed, albeit atop a 747, for the last time ... Pictured above, the piggybacking shuttle was snapped on approach last week to LAX as it crossed above and beyond a major Los Angeles street. Now retired, the space shuttles are all museum pieces, with the above shuttle scheduled to be towed along the streets of LA to the California Science Center.
Geoff Mackley, Bradley Ambrose, Nathan Berg, after an epic struggle with the weather for 35 days, we became the first people ever to get this close to Marum Volcano's famed lava lake on Ambrym Island, Vanuatu. Coming within 30 metres of the lava lake down a watercourse, it was possible to stand the heat for only 6 seconds. With Fire Brigade breathing apparatus and heat proof proximity suit it was possible to stand on the very edge and view the incredible show for over 40 minutes.
The whole level is wrapped around itself in a single surface, and poor Mario begins and ends at the same spot every time :( All the elements from the level are there: every mushroom, turtle, cloud and star. They are all carved out of the surface at different heights, which looks fantastic when you have a light coming from the side, and each block casts a shadow.(via reddit)
Due to the current economic, social and cultural crisis in The United States of America today, I have decided to do a photographic project consisting of a series of studio portraits of superhero and celebrity impersonators that live and work in the city of Los Angeles. Most of them unemployed Americans, they decided to suit up with their costumes and hit the streets, animate parties and events in efforts to make ends meet. Making them pose in their costumes against a colorful backdrop, I ask them to manifest feelings of genuine sadness – honest emotions that are a consequence of our current times. The result is a somber, striking visual image that contradicts the iconic nature of strength and moral righteousness typical in American superhero and celebrity imagery. Creating the illusion that Superman does exist – that he too was fallible and affected by America’s downturn.(via Curious Brain)
"These are 110 students, staff and friends of the HESAV(High School of Health Vaud) who have participated in this new performance from the Swiss artist NOTsoNOISY Guillaume Reymond and Trivial Mass Production: a titanic work but ultra fun resulting in an incredible video in which we discover a tower whose the facade is animated by many patterns such as a VJ lo-fi 8bits screening. But in this case there is no projector and this is just manually moving the windows and shutters on 11 floors and 10 rows that magic operates simulating the pixels of a giant rudimentary screen (10x11 pixels )."
An homage dedicated to the Super Nintendo & my childhood. The idea of the video is as the title suggests. The sprites that are featured in the video are seen in their idle animations or left alone to be pummeled, etc. I tried fitting in as many games as I could that featured sprites in a classic side-scrolling style. Besides being zoomed in, all of the footage is in it's original emulated state/speed without manipulation. Quite a few of the games had multiple characters to choose from. For the most part, I tried keeping it to one selection per game. One thing that I focused on was choosing female characters, there aren't that many female stars in video games... So, some majority fan favorites were left out ...
