Die Sparkasse Chemnitz hat in einem Online-Voting ihre Kunden über Motivkreditkarten abstimmen lassen – mit dem Ergebnis, dass es jetzt eine Karl Marx-Kreditkarte gibt. Treppenwitz der Geschichte quasi. Und ja, ich weiß, dass Chemnitz ein paar Jahrzehnte Karl-Marx-Stadt hieß. Aber hey: Karl Marx auf einer Kreditkarte!

Elbphilharmonie - Seid verschlungen, Müllionen!

Die Elbphilharmonie in der Hamburger Hafencity, auch als "Schandmal für die Reichen" bekannt, sollte 2010 fertig sein. Mittlerweile streiten sich Hochtief und die Stadt vor Gericht, die Baukosten explodieren (in ersten Planungen 77 Millionen aus denen wohl 476 Millionen Euro werden) und für wichtigere Baustellen, bei denen es nicht um Steine sondern Menschen geht, fehlt hinten und vorne das Geld. Hamburg meine Perle.

Evolution der Farben in Filmplakaten seit 1914

Um seine Behauptung zu beweisen, dass Filmposter die letzten Jahre dunkler und blaustichiger geworden sind, hat Vijay Pandurangan die Thumbnails von 35.000 Filmpostern runtergeladen, jeweils deren Pixel gezählt, nach Jahr gruppiert und Farbton sortiert. Nerds!

The movies whose posters I analysed "cover a good range of genres. Perhaps the colors say less about how movie posters' colors as a whole and color trends, than they do about how genres of movies have evolved. For example, there are more action/thriller/sci-fi [films] than there were 50-70 years ago, which might have something to do with the increase in darker, more 'masculine' shades.

Lisa Ma hat in Shenzhen eine Joystick-Fabrik besucht und ein paar Wochen mit den Arbeiterinnen und Arbeitern verbracht. Die Auftragslage ist schlecht und so lässt sich die Firmenleitung auf einen ungewöhnlichen Vorschlag ein.

I was given the opportunity to stay in a joystick factory in China for a months with factory workers. The joystick factory has a problem -we don't buy joysticks anymore. In this film, we witness some of the insights and stories of the factory life, beyond the Western stereotypes, that led to a proposal of a part-time farming scheme for manufacturing industries.

Chronophone: Crossfader-Grammophone von 1910

Léon Gaumont stellte 1910 das Chronophone vor, um Film und Ton unterbrechungsfrei synchron zu halten. Man konnte damit aber auch einen Tanzsaal mit 4000 Leuten bespielen. Steampunkdisko quasi. Fotos und Infos gibts hier.

Note the twin gramophones, driven from a common electric motor between them. An air hose goes to each valvebox from the control valve just under the air pressure gauge; I suspect that this control valve allowed the operator to crossfade between the two gramophones. DJ in the house!Below this, there is a light-coloured metal manifold which connects the the gramophone output pipes to the two horns. Quite how the record arms are pivoted so they can follow the track on the disc is a bit unclear, but there appears to be some sort of ball joint where they enter the manifold ...

ISS Star Trails

Don Pettit hat von Bord der Internationalen Raumstation aus langzeitbelichtete Fotos gemacht, die ziemlich trippig aussehen. Irgendwo zwischen Tron und dem Finale von "2001: A Space Odyssey". Das 23-teilige Album gibts im NASA-Flickr.

"My star trail images are made by taking a time exposure of about 10 to 15 minutes. However, with modern digital cameras, 30 seconds is about the longest exposure possible, due to electronic detector noise effectively snowing out the image. To achieve the longer exposures I do what many amateur astronomers do. I take multiple 30-second exposures, then ‘stack’ them using imaging software, thus producing the longer exposure."

Project Hawkthrone: Community 8Bit Game For Real

Vor kurzem gabs bei meiner (noch) Lieblings Sitcom Community eine Folge (S03E20), die im fiktiven 8Bit-Game "Hawkthorne" spielte (hier ein Ausschnitt). Jetzt haben sich Reddit-User zusammengetan und lassen das Game Wirklichkeit werden. Erste Versionen für OS X und Windows kann man sich hier runterladen.

Your Secret Telephone Directory On Your Wrist

Mein Telefonverzeichnis war mal mein Kopf, dann mein Mobiltelefon, dass meine Uhr ist. Aber wenn  es eine sein muss, gerne eine Casio aus den 80ern. Meine letzte funktionierende ist übrigens eine Casio CMD-40F-7 aus den 90ern mit Fernbedienung – ein total unnützes Feature, außer im Elektromarkt vor der Fernsehwand.
