Halloween-Kürbisschnitzerei: The Alien Made from Squash

'officially it's name is L.O.V. E. - so it stands for love - but everyone can read between the lines and take away the message they see for themselves.' maurizio cattelan
conceived especially for milan, all the fingers of the hand are cut off, except for the middle one, final mockery of all 'isms' - 'against ideology' ...
the sculpture represents also the semantic turnover of the leader’s assertive gesture and of power, codified by the classical monument.
a dialogue with the past: indeed, the artist is convinced that he has actually proposed a conservative and traditional work...
an opinion which the top leaders of palazzo marino (the city's town house) do not agree with ..." maurizio cattelan's middle finger displayed in milan

"My work focuses on the intersection of art and science and the visual articulation of scientific observations. Using the methodologies and processes of both disciplines, I translate scientific data related to astronomy, ecology andmeteorology woven sculptures. My method of translation is principally that of weaving – in particular basket weaving – as it provides me with a simple yet highly effective grid through which to interpret data in three-dimensional space. By staying true to the numbers, these woven pieces tread an uneasy divide between functioning both as sculptures in space as well as instruments that could be used in the actual environment from which the data originates ..."

Four Letter Word Generator

Vimeo: Four Letter Word (via technabob)

Without Cabinet von Helmut Smits

"My work investigates the slippery intersection between the digital world and reality. Specifically, I am interested in how we experience nature through technology. When we see images of nature on TV or on a computer screen, we feel that we are seeing nature but we are really only seeing patterns of pixilated light. For the past few years, I have been creating a series of “Re-things.” These whimsical sculptures represent pixilated animals and objects of nature. I find images of my subjects online and then create three-dimensional sculptural representations of these two-dimensional images. I build my “Re-things” pixel by pixel to understand how each pixel plays a crucial role in the identity of an object ... In my building process, I start with a full sheet of material like plywood or MDF and cut it into ½” strips of varying lengths--typically ½” to 2’ long. I then hand dye each strip of wood individually with dyes mixed from ink and acrylic paint. I mix each color by hand to create a huge palette of colors in order to give the sculpture more depth and visual interest before assembling the object. My conceptual and material practice explores identity, color, labor, technology, and science ..."
